Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
Overview: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common condition caused by a change in the balance of healthy bacteria in your vagina. In about half of all cases, there are no symptoms. Most cases of BV are related to sexual activity. BV can be easily treated with antibiotics.¹
Symptoms: When present, vaginal thrush symptoms include a watery white or grey discharge.²
Causes: Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of ‘bad’ bacteria in your vagina. However, BV is not a sexually transmitted infection.¹ Risk factors include multiple sexual partners, douching, and using an IUD.
Lifestyle options: BV is usually treated with antibiotics, given as tablets or as a vaginal antibiotic cream or gel. It’s important to take the full course of antibiotics, even if your symptoms go away quickly.¹ To help prevent BV, avoid scented products near the vagina, avoid douching, and use condoms.
