Children’s Fever
Overview: A fever is when the body’s temperature rises to 38°C or more. Fevers are common in children and are a normal response to infection; in fact, they may help the immune system fight off infections.¹
Symptoms: The high temperature may make your child feel uncomfortable. Your child may also have other symptoms related to the cause of their fever.² A fever can sometimes cause febrile seizures, which usually occur between 6 months and 6 years of age.
Causes: Fever is one of the ways your body fights infection. Infections with a virus are by far the most common cause of fever in children. It’s also possible to have a fever after some childhood vaccinations.²
Lifestyle options: If your child has a fever, dress them in light clothing to help keep them comfortable and encourage them to drink plenty of fluids. Avoid over-bundling, and monitor how they are feeling. Cold baths and showers are not recommended for babies and children with a fever. There is no need to give medicines to a child for fever unless they are in pain or discomfort – paracetamol or ibuprofen (for children 3 months or older) can help.² Take babies under 3 months with a fever above 38°C to the nearest emergency department immediately.
