Children’s Allergy & Hay Fever

Children’s Allergy & Hay Fever

Overview: Hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, is a common allergic reaction in the nose that can also affect the eyes, throat, ears, and sinuses. It is a reaction to substances in the air like pollens or dust mites.¹

Symptoms: Signs and symptoms of hay fever in children include² a runny nose, itchy/watery eyes, sneezing, blocked nose, and snoring. If hay fever isn’t treated and managed well, it can be a risk factor for the development of asthma, sinusitis, or middle-ear infections.³

Causes: Seasonal hay fever happens when your child has an allergy to pollens – small particles released into the air by some grasses and trees. Perennial hay fever happens all year round and is caused by other triggers such as dust mites, animal saliva or skin cells caught in fur or hair, and mould spores. Children have a greater risk of developing hay fever if someone in their immediate family experiences it.⁴

Lifestyle options: Keep windows closed to reduce allergens entering the home, stay indoors where possible when pollen counts are high, and regularly wash hands. Showering and changing your child’s clothes after outdoor play can also help remove pollen.⁵ There is no cure for hay fever, but there are proven ways to manage the condition. Three main types of medicine recommended for children are non-drowsy antihistamines, steroid nasal spray, and combination antihistamine and steroid nasal spray.
