Blood Pressure
Overview: High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a common condition. It usually does not cause any symptoms, but it increases your risk of other health problems. About 1 in every 3 Australian adults has high blood pressure.¹
Symptoms: Most people with high blood pressure have no symptoms. This is why it’s important to have your blood pressure checked regularly.¹ If you’re over 18, your blood pressure should be checked at least every 2 years.
Causes: For most people, the cause of high blood pressure is not known – this is sometimes called ‘essential hypertension’. Your risk can be increased by leading a sedentary lifestyle, doing little or no exercise.¹ Other modifiable risk factors include a high-salt diet, being overweight, smoking, and drinking too much alcohol.
Lifestyle options: You may find that lifestyle changes can lower your blood pressure. Often, a combination of lifestyle measures works better than one alone.¹ These include eating a low-salt, high-fibre diet, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol. Two out of five people can successfully lower their blood pressure by making adjustments to their lifestyle.² Some people will also need medication.
