More information about Diabetes Educators and living with diabetes

Diabetes educators specialise in diabetes self-management education for people with diabetes. Their focus is on assisting people with diabetes, their families and carers to gain the knowledge, skills, motivation and confidence to manage their condition.

Diabetes Educators help by empowering people with diabetes to take charge of their health.

They provide personalised education, help create individualised diabetes management plans, teach self-care skills, and offer ongoing support to help patients achieve better blood sugar control and overall health.

Yes, Diabetes Educators can teach proper insulin administration techniques and people with diabetes and their families/carers on adjusting insulin dosages based on blood glucose readings and other factors. This helps ensure insulin is tailored to each person’s unique needs.

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that affects how your body processes glucose (sugar). It occurs when either the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin (Type 1 diabetes) or the body becomes resistant to insulin’s effects (Type 2 diabetes), leading to high blood sugar levels.

Symptoms of diabetes can vary depending on the person, but typically include increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, slow-healing wounds, and recurrent infections.

Diabetes management involves a combination of lifestyle changes, medication (in some cases), blood glucose monitoring, regular exercise, and following a healthy diet. For those with Type 1 diabetes, insulin therapy is essential, while people with Type 2 diabetes may also require oral medications or insulin, depending on their condition.

These strategies are unique to each person with diabetes and include a range of options and methods with the help of a Diabetes Educator.

Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to serious health complications over time. These may include cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, nerve damage, eye problems and a higher risk of infections.

Currently, there is no cure for diabetes. However, with proper management and lifestyle choices, it can be effectively controlled, allowing those with the condition to live a healthy life and reduce the risk of complications.
